top 10 beauty favorites of 2015

Yay, 2016! It's finally here and I am happy to leave 2015 behind. For me, 2016 is going to be about simplifying more and spending less. While I tend to be a minimalist and refuse to hoard tons of products, I do try a lot of new things and sometimes go overboard at Sephora. Here are some my favorites that I discovered in 2015 and will definitely stick with in the future.

Philosophy Purity face wash: This is a super gentle cleanser that is non-drying and has kept my skin calm. After a day of wearing makeup, I double cleanse using the Purity facial cleansing oil first, then the face wash. I wouldn't have bought the oil on its own, but the set was on sale at Sephora and I'm so glad the oil came with it. It really gets all the dirt and makeup off and I don't have to worry about anything being left over. I used to despise the feeling of washing my face and then still seeing makeup on the cottonball when I used a toner afterward! I also use the Purity mask since that came in the set as well-- it's not a mask that dries and hardens, but it leaves my skin super soft and is gentle enough to use every day (though I use it about once a week). All of the Purity products are a win!

Lush Imperialis moisturizer: I became a bit of a Lush addict this year. Some products were great and others are just okay. But this one is a new go-to. I was surprised at how fast it absorbs, which I love! I need that in the morning since I get ready quickly and don't want to wait for it to soak in before applying my makeup. It's not a heavy moisturizer, but it's effective. And a little dab goes a long way-- I've been accustomed to using a lot with other moisturizers, but you don't need much with Imperialis (which is great because it lasts longer).

Lush The Olive Branch shower gel: I am beyond obsessed with this shower gel. I purchased the travel size after reading a rave review on Kate La Vie. It smells incredible, and I think it could be used by men as well. It smells orangey, tangy and not overly flowery. It has olive oil to keep your skin soft, and it does just that. I couldn't get a good idea of the scent in my mind before I used it, so I recommend picking up the travel size or popping into a Lush store to smell it for yourself. But I can almost guarantee you will love it as much as I do! I just purchased the biggest size and it's going to last me forever.

Victoria's Secret Bombshell mist: I just bought this last week, so it's not really a 2015 purchase-- but I have been searching so long for a fragrance that I truly love instead of settling for one that's just okay. It's harder than it sounds! Two of my close friends have been long-time wearers of Victoria's Secret perfumes and every time I see them they smell amazing, so I don't know why it took me so long. I spent New Year's with one of them and she once again told me she was wearing VS after I commented on how good she smelled, so that sealed the deal for me! I stopped into VS the other day and tested a bunch of them. Bombshell is the winner! It's fruity but grown up, and not overly sweet. Even when I'm just around the house and not wearing it, I pick up the bottle to sniff because I like it so much (is that weird?). The $25 price tag makes it even better.

Rimmel Stay Matte primer: I use this primer in a different way: on my eyes. I do get a little oily in my t-zone, but matte primer all over my face makes me look extremely dry. However, my eyelids get super oily and that always prevents me from being able to wear eyeshadow (even with specific eye primers-- I've tried!). But I decided 2015 was the year I was going to bring some pretty color back to my eyelids, so I picked up this primer and gave it a shot. It works! It's way too matte for my face, but does the trick on my lids. My eyeshadow is a lot more long wearing with this underneath. I am careful when applying because it's not meant for eyes, but so far I haven't had a problem.

Pacifica Coco Pure Makeup Removing Wipes: I was at a friend's house last year and she had these in her beauty stash. I'm always a sucker for coconut, so I picked them up. They are awesome! There are definitely nights when I am lazy and want to take off my makeup without washing my face. The problem is that most wipes don't do a good enough job or leave my face feeling disgusting after, so I need to wash it anyway. These wipes not only get off all the makeup (including mascara!), but my face feels fresh after. They have come in so handy for weekend trips! I no longer pack face wash-- I just throw these in my bag and call it a day. I used them after New Years to take off all my makeup and it worked great, plus they smell like coconut and I love that. I will say that you might want to follow up with a toner if you are taking off heavy makeup, just to make sure you get 100% of it off. I also love using these before bed when I haven't worn any makeup.

Burt's Bees Toner: This is a product that I stopped using in 2015, but I am going back. After I used up my last bottle, I decided to branch out and try a Lush toner. I love Burt's Bees a lot more. I always feel like it cleans well and gets the last bit of my makeup off (back before I switched to Purity!). It doesn't feel harsh and overall, I just like it a lot.

Clinique Superprimer: I have tried a lot of different face primers via Sephora samples, and this one really works for me. At $27, it's not crazy cheap, but a little goes a long way and it lasts longer than expected. I like it because it's not a matte primer, but it does prevent my oily sections from coming through. Makeup wears well on top of it and stays put throughout the day. The only other primer I've found that tops this one is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, but at $52 for 1 oz, I can't justify the spending. Having used the samples, I will say that Hourglass is top of the line and you should at least try it at some point. If I'm treating myself, I'll get the $18 tiny bottle.

e.l.f. Baked Eyeshadow Palette: e.l.f. products are awesome. They're at Target, they're low cost, and they wear super well. After discovering that the Rimmel primer works wonders on my eyelids, I picked up this e.l.f. palette to try. I tend to stick to everyday neutrals and golds, but I like to have some darker options for a night out. These colors don't disappoint and they last all day (though for me, that is the magic of the primer). After I allow time for my primer to set, I layer these on using my finger. With the Urban Decay palettes getting so much hype, I'm happy to spend way less on eyeshadow that does just as good a job.My best friend just gifted me this e.l.f. palette for Christmas, so I am excited to use that one too.

BeautyBlender: My favorite find of 2015! I have used everything from fingers to brushes to apply my foundation. I got tired of washing brushes and they never quite blended like I wanted them to. I don't like to risk getting bacteria on my face from my hands either. The beauty blender is a great compromise-- it lives up to the hype! It blends my foundation super well and allows me to layer and build easily if I feel I need more coverage. To clean, I use a little Purity face wash, squeeze, and rinse until clear water comes out. And I always dampen before applying, which I suspect is how it blends so well.

And one bonus item because I have to mention it: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella. It was the 2015 free birthday gift from Sephora for Beauty Insiders, and it's amazing. This color looks good on anyone (I've let my friends borrow!), and it really lasts, especially when I pair it with this lip primer.Go get yourself one!

If you're in the market for something new in the beauty department this year, give one of the above products a try! They are working for me and I have a good feeling they will work for you too.

beauty review :: dessange purifying clay

image via google

Not gonna lie... I'm a sucker for products. I try to be a minimalist and I certainly don't have drawers full of makeup I'll never use, but I do give in to things I want to try. So when I saw the Dessange Purifying Clay hair mask in an xoVain article, I really wanted to see if it lives up to the hype.

The appeal stems from a few key points. First, you can get this mask at Target. Since I have a Target card, I always buy whatever I can there! Yay discounts and free shipping! Second, this is a pre-shampoo mask. I can let it sit on my head for 10 minutes before my shower and multi-task. I love that it doesn't involve an extra step in the shower aside from rinsing it out. Lastly, I really wanted to give it a shot because I have always had oily roots, even by day two of clean hair. So if this product was going to work for anyone, it would be me.

Here's the rundown:

I applied the clay mask to my hair using the brush applicator. That was fun, it made me feel like I was at the salon. Per the instructions, I just applied to my roots and massaged it really well before letting it sit for about 8 minutes. (I'll try 10 next time.) I rinsed it out in the shower before shampooing and made sure to give my head a thorough scrub so none of it was left behind. Easy peasy.

Today is day two post-shampoo and I have to say, my roots don't feel greasy. I'm trying to figure out if that's just in my head-- but even if it is, it's working! I normally feel the need to use some dry shampoo just to touch up, but I didn't and my roots still feel clean. I try to go about three days without washing my hair unless I desperately need to, and day three is usually way oily, so I am going to wait until tomorrow and assess the situation. If it's really doing its job, this is an answered prayer. And at $12, it's not breaking the bank. So far, I recommend this if you have oil-prone roots!

I'm not normally a person who wins things. Half the time I don't enter contests because the odds are not ever in my favor. I don't get the ticket-winning gene from my dad (who spends a lot of time calling into radio stations, but also spends a lot of time enjoying country concerts and flying to the iHeart Music Festival in Miami). It's safe to say that I don't care enough to put effort into winning things :)

My friend/old roommate Twila moved to Arlington, VA recently, and found this new shop in Alexandria. A notification popped up on my Instagram telling me she had tagged me in a random drawing to win $25 from the shop. We actually won! I was so excited to actually win something, I forgot to check out what the shop was all about.

Curated is a brand new shop in the heart of Old Town Alexandria-- so new, in fact, that they weren't even open yet when I won the contest! They kept my interest as I browsed through their Instagram, though. So may cute things I wanted to snatch up! I just had to be patient and wait. But the owner, Page, was great about emailing me and making sure I wasn't forgotten. And since I'm not local to VA, she sent me a code once the online store opened to use for my $25 credit.

They have a beautiful selection of items, and I highly recommend checking them out if you need a gift for a girlfriend or just to treat yourself! I walked away with this mug and this journal, and I'm so excited for them to arrive in the mail. Sometimes it's just nice to get a little something for yourself that makes you feel good! Head over to Curated before everything sells-- I have a feeling it will go quickly!

featured:: Shake Shack

My roommate Laura is from St. Louis. She loves to talk about how the best burger ever is at Steak 'n' Shake. She wasn't wrong, because the first (and only) time I had it, it was delicious. Then we found out they were building a Steak 'n' Shake near us! Oh joy!

Except it still hasn't shown up yet. They haven't even started building. You can imagine the disappoint from two burger lovers such as ourselves. But Baltimore saved the day and put a Shake Shack in the Inner Harbor! It's not Laura's beloved Steak 'n' Shake, but we decided it will have to do.

So Saturday night we trekked into Bmore, paid way too much to park because we were impatient and starving, and braced ourselves for a crazy St. Patrick's day crowd. Laura was convinced she wouldn't like it that much compared to Steak 'n' Shake. I had no expectations whatsoever because at this point, if it's not a sit-down restaurant and it's not McD's, then it's pretty much all the same to me.

WRONG! It was so good, you guys. A delicious burger with fresh ingredients is the best thing ever. Laura gets hers plain but I had lettuce and tomato on mine, and couldn't stop shoving it in her face to show her how fresh it looked. Also, we have a strict "no crinkle fries" policy in our house, so we had already prepared ourselves for disappointment. But once again, we were proved wrong. They were super crispy, not mushy at all, and with a sprinkle of Old Bay and some ketchup, they were the perfect accompaniment to the burgers.

Finally, we had our hearts set on getting concretes. I had never heard of that before but Laura explained it to me so I wouldn't be "that person" in line with no clue what they were ordering. A concrete is a dense frozen custard ice cream blended at high speed with things you can mix in. Laura got plain chocolate, but I went all out and got one of their signatures: the Shack Attack. It was basically death by chocolate. Chocolate custard, fudge sauce, chocolate truffle cookie dough and dark chocolate chunks, topped with chocolate sprinkles. We definitely didn't finish them and have been enjoying them this week! Leftovers are always nice. Dessert is the one thing that Laura will forever say Steak 'n' Shake is better for, because she is obsessed with their chocolate malts. I can't blame her.

Overall, we had the best time eating there and we have already been talking about going back really soon. It was super delicious and the new Inner Harbor location wasn't overcrowded, even though there were a lot of people there. We were able to get a table right away and enjoy our food without a wait. And they seem to have something for everyone... they have a portobello mushroom "burger" as a vegetarian option, which I'd like to try at some point. Everything is customizable, too. We can't wait to treat ourselves again! (I have my eye on a double burger the next time!)

featured :: blogs of the week

I fell down the blogging rabbit hole this week. Things have been a little slow at work since we just passed a deadline, but I've been keeping myself busy! One click leads to another and all of a sudden, you have a million new blogs to keep up with.

I wanted to share my findings with you because these ladies are creative, fun to read, and are exactly the type of blog I browse often. Jackpot!

Man D  :: One look through her travel photos, and I was hooked. I now feel the need to fly to Paris on a whim!

Le Blog de Betty :: First of all, can you get any cuter than her blog header? I think not. Secondly, she has great style that one can only dream of imitating. It's best left to her, I say.

What Olivia Did :: Style, adventures, cooking... this girl's life looks so fun. It's becoming more apparent that living outside of the U.S. seems more fun in general. ;)

J for Jen :: I really love what Jen wears (that tartan scarf!!) and enjoy following her travels around the UK.

The Little Magpie :: This blog makes me want to scream, "Can I please be part of your world??" (Cue "The Little Mermaid" soundtrack.) But really. Amy is a Scottish beauty who has incredible taste and I can't imagine anyone not loving what she's producing in her space.

I love new favorites to keep up with in the blog world... happy reading!

featured :: Newsies & La Tavola

For months, a group of us had tickets to see Newsies at The Hippodrome in Baltimore. I love a good show, especially one set in 1920's old New York. I made Laura watch the 1992 movie with baby Christian Bale the night before we went... so good. :) We got all dolled up and even threw on some red lipstick (overachieving, for me)! And you can't tell, but I got my hair cut that morning. Well, trimmed. Dead ends, you know.

The show was awesome... if you get a chance to see it, go! We really enjoyed it. Even though I'm hooked on the movie version for life, I didn't mind the subtle changes they made. After the show, a few of us went for a nice Italian dinner at La Tavola in Little Italy. It's been a while since I've had a classy, authentic Italian meal, and I wasn't disappointed! Whenever I can get fresh gnocchi, I'm a happy camper. I had a glass of Merlot and a goat cheese salad too. Yum!

I rarely ever order dessert, but I can never pass up real tiramisu. Never ever. The white chocolate stick made it even better.

It's so fun to go to a musical and dinner-- especially for a girl's night out! Check out The Hippodrome if you're in the Baltimore area. We have tickets to see Wicked next, and I can't wait!

featured :: miss shirley's

If you're a Maryland native like me, or live anywhere around Baltimore, you know about Miss Shirley's. This is one of my absolute favorite places, though I've only been a couple of times. The food is amazing, you can sit outside when the weather is nice, and they have something for everyone. I went for brunch with a group of girlfriends a couple of weeks ago because our friend Lauren was in town, and we miss her!

First, we start with mimosas. (And/or Bloody Mary's!)

You must get the Monkey Bread. Do not question this decision!

There are a lot of choices (I was jealous of Lauren's grilled cheese!), but when it comes to brunch, I am an eggs benedict girl all the way. I rarely get anything else. This one was insane: crab meat poached eggs, Old Bay hollandaise, bacon grits, onion jam, battered oysters. Oysters!

Of course, we had to document. I didn't get the scarf memo. Neither did Terah, so it's okay. :)

And one more because that's how we do.

There are now three Miss Shirley's locations, including one in Annapolis, so go get yourself some deliciousness! I insist.

featured :: LUSH

I’m one of those people who have soft hands all year round… except for winter. UGH, winter and your cold! My hands become dry and cracked so easily, it’s ridiculous. Not to mention that people love to come to work while they’re sick in my office, so I use a ton of hand sanitizer, which dries my hands out even more. Before I know it, I have bleeding knuckles and it’s painful.

My good friend Elizabeth had told me about LUSH’s Dream Cream about a year ago. Silly me, I didn’t listen. In fact, I’m not the biggest fan of hand lotions. They tend to make me greasy, and as someone who constantly works with their hands (typing at work, playing guitar, etc.), I got in the habit of suffering through winter with dry hands. Elizabeth and I went to the mall last weekend for a Sephora fix and some new nose rings (where do they all disappear to?!), and decided to stop by LUSH.

E mentioned that she uses the Dream Cream at night and it did wonders for her, so I decided to pick some up. The grease factor isn’t too much of an issue when you’re sleeping! But the lovely lady in the store also gave me a sample of their Helping Hands lotion to try for the daytime, since my hands are usually at their worst in the office.

First up, the Dream Cream: it’s really thick, has a rosy scent and will absolutely heal your hands of all their issues. E didn’t lie when she said it’s the best at night. I go to bed with dry hands and wake up with soft skin. Plus, I use a little extra in the morning before I leave the house, and that helps as well. It’s actually an all-purpose lotion, not just for hands, so I apply some to my legs and arms after I get out of the shower. It comes in a big tub so I know I won’t be running out anytime soon… worth the money!

The Helping Hands lotion is specifically for hands, so I keep it at my work desk. Like I said, I use tons of hand sanitizer throughout the day and am constantly washing my hands with that generic office soap, so it helps a ton. I just dab a small amount on the backs of my hands where they are the driest, and it soothes them immediately. If I use it on my palms, it does stay lotion-y for a few minutes, but it will soak in and then you’re good to go without feeling like it’s getting all over everything. I haven’t felt like it’s spread all over my computer keyboard yet. ;)

Fun fact: if there is a lotion or cream you’d like to try but aren’t sure about, the staff at LUSH is super great about giving you a sample to take home. My Helping Hands sample hasn’t begun to run out because you only need a tiny bit at a time.  I see it lasting at least a month or two, which is amazing for something small and free! Plus, their products are natural—I love when I can recognize every ingredient listed.  I highly recommend these two products for yourself or a holiday gift!

featured :: office makeover!

Let's be honest... office cubicles are just about the ugliest work environment in existance. I've worked in many a office, and they are all gray and boring. When I took my current job about a month ago, I was bound and determined to make the place feel like home. I didn't want to come to work every day and sit in a gray/beige bubble. So over it! With the help of Pinterest and the internet in general, I was able to spruce it up a bit. (Excuse the crappy iPhone photos.)

As you can see, pink was a theme :) My first order of business was to cover up the beige pushpin wall behind my computer. It was just too boring. I found the minty green wrapping paper at Target and measured it out so it would fit... everyone who stops by my cube loves it! Everything came from Target, as a matter of fact. That place was sent from the Lord to help people like me get their lives together. The tray was only $5 and is pretty lightweight, but it just needs to hold my materials and it's perfect for that. The pink cup holding my pens came from the kids drinking cup aisle (that's a thing, I swear) for super cheap. And I had to buy my favorite Inkjoy pens, of course! I found the inspirational quotes on the interwebz and printed them on cardstock so they would be more sturdy. I discovered that one of my coworkers loves Beyonce, so that was a crowd pleaser! And as I've shared before, the Hustle mug is my new favorite.(Check out the rest of Charm&Gumption's shop-- super cute!)

I still have a couple more ideas that I'd like to implement... perhaps twinkle lights for the holiday season, and a banner to go on a wall that's still bare. I'm also drying out my roses from Jude's wedding. "Dead" flowers are so much easier than live ones. I kill them all!

And to start off your weekend right: the latest from Meghan Trainor. It's about a thousand times better than "All About That Bass", if you ask me!

featured :: making the office your own

Since I've started my new job, I've felt a very strong need to put down some roots. Not only because I'm tired of switching jobs, but because I really feel at home here. And a home away from home deserves a little decorating, don't you think? :)

I'll share some pictures later when my upgrade is done, but here is where I found inspiration:

This article has so many good ideas!

I already bought this mug and I love it so much.

A great reminder for all the Beyonce lovers out there ;)

Kind of obsessed with this succulents set! It's possible they are the only plants I can't kill...

Hoping to have my little cubicle done soon! I've gotten a lot of compliments on it so far, and I have to say, my 40 hours a week feels much better in a decorated space. I enjoy coming to work and seeing my bright corner!

featured :: makeup to try

If you're a girl, then it's pretty likely that you understand the concept of the bottomless makeup bag. One day you take a look and you have twelve eyeshadows from high school and the same blush from when you were 13. I try to make it a priority to clean out my makeup stash and replace my products with new ones... who wants to put old makeup on, anyway?!

For the past year or so, I've been using Laura Mercier mineral foundation. I used to have oily, acne prone skin in high school, and my mom always bought me MAC liquid foundation. But I figured out the liquid was clogging up my pores and making me even more acne prone, so I switched to mineral foundation. That has worked well for me the past few years. However, I wanted to attempt to switch back to liquid just to see how it would feel now that I'm an adult and my skin has changed.

I made a trip to Target and got a few things. First, I started with Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse.

I had read some good things about this foundation and I was hoping it would live up to the hype. I tried it out as soon as I got home, and I was pleasantly surprised. It goes on smoothly and if you apply it right (more on that below), it doesn't look cakey. For my oil-prone skin, I set it with a bit of powder I already had on hand (Bare Minerals finishing powder). To get an even better finish, I use Burts Bees toner, Aveeno moisturizer, and E.L.F. face primer. These all really help the foundation not to streak or add too much buildup.

To apply the foundation, I also bought the E.L.F. Small Stippling Brush.

 This brush works well for wet and dry foundation, which is awesome. Truthfully, I didn't know how to use a stippling brush at first. But E.L.F. has a great video tutorial on their website to show you how. To apply my liquid foundation, I put a bit on the back of my hand (not too much-- otherwise I get carried away). You can always build up, so use a light hand. I dip the brush into a tiny bit of foundation and apply it to my face in a dabbing motion. To add more coverage, I use the typical sweeping or circular motion later. I find that dabbing gives a good base and blends really well.

I also wanted to try my hand at contouring, so I bought Maybelline SuperStay Concealer:

I've read that they key to this is to use a concealer that is two shades darker than your natural. I went with one just a bit darker than my skin tone, as I don't want to be super dramatic. I just wanted to see if I could create some definition. I still need to try again, but the first time I did it, I felt like I could see a difference! I think I may add more the second time around. To apply, I felt where my cheekbones were with my fingers, then added three dots of concealer right below. I blended that in a line and made sure it didn't get smeared all over my cheeks. Then I added blush on the apples of my cheeks to finish.

I would definitely recommended these three products to anyone who is looking to try new makeup without breaking the bank. I have long believed that because a product cost more, it is better quality. For some things, this is true. But the makeup industry has come a long way in terms of quality, and I think there are some great options out there for $7 that work just as well as $25.

Happy makeup-ing!

featured :: Dollar Shave Club

image via Dollar Shave Club

Have you guys heard about Dollar Shave Club? I first became aware of it when my Facebook friends kept liking their page. In the beginning I thought it was only for dudes, but a couple of my female friends have paid attention to it as well! After looking into it, I really liked their ideas and the concept of their brand. The premise of DSC is to give you great quality razors at a low price, delivered to your door. While I was skeptical about some hidden fee that actually makes it way more expensive than buying razors at your local Target, I found that they really do attempt to lower costs. All you have to do is select a razor, pay a low monthly fee ($1, $6, or $9 depending on the blade you choose), and they get sent to you! Sounds pretty great to me!

DSC's big thing is "we pride ourselves on helping people NOT have to 'squeeze' too much use out of their razors by providing great razors that are shipped right to your door for as low as a buck a month." In honor of this concept, I wanted to share some of the best and worst things to "squeeze the most out of":

Good things to squeeze the most out of:
- Toothpaste tubes. My roommate makes fun of me because the tube looks so flat and empty by the end... but I am always convinced there's some left!
- Your dog. I mean, gently. But dogs are great for cuddling, duh!
- Stress balls. Obviously. Work can get stressful. So can life. Get yourself a stress ball, stat!
- Oranges, lemons and limes. Juicing is a craze, but it's a good one.
- Your wet hair. Ladies, have you heard of the whole thing about using a t-shirt to dry your hair instead of a towel to prevent frizz? And that you should wring it out by squeezing instead of rubbing your head? Give it a try!

Bad things to squeeze the most out of:
- Babies. Well, you could do it gently, like your dog. But they generally don't like being tightly squeezed!
- Balloons. I can't even tell you the amount of terror I feel when a balloon pops. This happened to me recently when I was holding one. I'm still traumatized.
- Those plastic packages of brownie mix. I always think I can squeeze them open by popping the air out of them. You know where that gets you? Brownie mix all over your clean kitchen.
- People's hands. It hurts. And will prevent people from being your friend.
- Your bank account, of course. You don't want that dollar amount to say $0, do you?! (Which is why you should join Dollar Shave Club and save!!)

DSC also makes a great gift-- you could give a membership to a friend or family member for any birthday or holiday! Side note: I'm also thinking about using this shave butter on my legs. I bet it feels amazing. If you're looking for a way to save money and still use a high quality product, take a few minutes to check out Dollar Shave Club and give it a try!
